Domiciliary Care provides support and in-home support to individuals who require assistance with daily living due to age, illness, or disability, with a goal of enabling patients to maintain independence whilst ensuring that their health and recovery are met.
As part of the Healthcare industry, our task is to act as the bridge in between the patient and the healthcare team. This involves coordinating specialist appointments and transportation as needed.
To learn the collaborative role of the Domiciliary Care Professionals, we've listed down the different things that Carers are expected to perform while on the job.
As a carer, you must conduct thorough assessment of the patient's physical, emotional and social needs. You will also develop personalized care plans in consultation with patients, families, and healthcare providers.
Another of the roles of a carer is to provide medical support at home, with tasks mostly in administering medication as prescribed by doctors, monitoring of vital signs and symptoms to detect changes in the patient's conditions, and assisting with rehabilitation exercises as guided by physiotherapists or medical professionals.
Emotional and Psychological Support is one of the things a caregiver offers towards their patients. Offering companionship to combat feelings of loneliness and isolation. As a carer, you must also encourage patients to voice concerns and actively participate in decision-making, and create a positive and supportive environment to promote mental well being.
As a carer, providing knowledge and teaching patients and their families how to manage chronic conditions and post-operative care is part of you role. These include demonstrating proper techniques for Wound Care, Mobility Aids, and dietary adjustments. This allows families to take an active role in the recovery process.
Finally, as a carer, another one of your roles you also need to fulfill is promoting a holistic recovery, which focuses on the patient's overall well being, physical, emotional and social health. By encouraging activities that improve the quality of life such as hobbies, light, and exercise or social engagement.
Being a Domiciliary care professional means having to play a crucial role in the recovery process through the fostering of a collaborative approach which emphasizes personal care and effective communication. Only through the collaborative effort of these parties can the professionals, and the patients' families, can make the experience in caring for the individual even better.
